January News Letter - A New Year to Stay Informed
Dear Patrons,

With ringing in the New Year, 2016 stands to be a pivotal year for USD 439 as well as all other school districts in the state. There are several key issues that will be addressed this year that may significantly impact our district. First, our Education Commissioner, Randy Watson, and the State Board of Education have set forth a new path for Leading the World in the Success of Each Student with the motto Kansas Can. The Board’s new vision has been very well received across the state. Stay tuned for more information.

There are significant decisions to be made in 2016. First, the K-12 Legislative Committee will be making recommendations in January for a new school funding system for all Kansas public schools. Alvereze and Marshal, a consulting firm hired by the state of Kansas, will be finalizing their recommendations for efficiencies which are said to include “significant” recommendations for public education. The Supreme Court will be ruling on the equity portion of school funding in the next few weeks and the adequacy portion of school funding later in the year. Next, the 2016 legislative session will begin in January to tackle a number of revenue/tax issues as well as a budget deficit for the next fiscal year. On top of all that, it is an election year.

As the New Year gets under way here in Sedgwick, look for several scheduled community meetings to allow discussion on thoughts, ideas, needs, and direction for our district. Thank you for supporting your local school district and have a great 2016.

My family and I are so fortunate to be part of this community. If you have questions or concerns regarding USD 439, please do not hesitate to call, stop by, or send me an email.
